So you have decided to get external wall insulation in your home?
This is a wise choice as twice as much heat escapes through solid walls as cavity walls and therefore external insulation will not only reduce your energy bills, prevent mould and improve the kerb appeal but will also make your home more energy-efficient.
Solid wall insulation, however, is not cheap, so how do you know what the best value insulation system is?
This all comes down to the material used for the insulation board attached to the exterior wall of your home.
There are three main materials used; expanded polystyrene (EPS), mineral wool or wood fibre.
The most commonly used insulation board is expanded polystyrene (EPS) for a number of reasons. It is the most cost-effective material, at nearly half the price of mineral wool. Additionally, it does a better job at insulating than mineral wool, so you will need a thinner layer.
It is also incredibly durable as well as water-resistant and will continue to insulate your home for years to come without losing effectiveness.
Mineral wool is made from volcanic rock and is the material also used in cavity walls and lofts, but for external wall insulation, the fibre is compressed further to make a stiff board.
It is very easy to work with as the boards are flexible and it is easy to attach to wooden or metal frames.
Additionally, as a natural fibre, it is more breathable than EPS and provides very good noise insulation. However, it is less durable than EPS but it is completely recyclable so is more environmentally friendly.
Wood fibre is a relative late-comer to the party but ticks all the environmentally friendly boxes as it is a renewable resource, will improve air quality, reduces emissions as well as thermally insulating your home, therefore, ensuring you use less energy.
Additionally, wood fibre helps to ensure your home maintains a cool temperature in the summer as it takes longer for the energy from the sun to get through the insulation.
